And so this is Christmas…

And what have you done?

Well personally I’ve managed to:

  • Wrap the few presents I’m getting people that require wrapping (thank Yoda for gift cards and third party gift services);
  • Achieve my “miracle a week” at work in a record 3 day working week;
  • Not gone completely mental at the supermarket while doing my grocery shopping, despite the pushing and shoving over the last 10 punnets of strawberries (all of which I decided were too inferior for a $6.95 per punnet price tag);
  • Done a mad dash to the supermarket after work today to get enough meat for the cats over Christmas (they threatened to kill me in my sleep if they had to subsist on dry food alone);
  • Vowed to never again agree to host Christmas at my house;
  • Decided that it really does not matter if you don’t have matching table cloths, napkins and plastic plates and cutlery, only to find that virtually everyone else I know disagrees with this;
  • Resolved that it’s my house and my rules so other people’s opinions on whether blue, purple and red plates are appropriately Christmassy really do not matter;
  • Counselled my bestie who was having a pre-Christmas crisis of whether or not people should be allowed to socialise around her brand new lounge suite when food and beverages are close at hand;
  • Prepared the fruit platter, peeled, chopped and washed vegies in preparation for burning murdering roasting tomorrow;
  • Decided that 2kg of roast beef, a whole leg of ham, a stuffed turkey breast roll and several kilos of prawns is probably enough meat for 8 people and I do not need to cook a corned beef “just in case”.

Cats....they hate karaoke too!

Honestly, it’s a wonder anyone gets out of the Christmas season with their sanity still intact. The big day is tomorrow and no doubt you will be surrounded by family and/or friends (whether you like it or not) to mark its passing. No doubt you will get at least one gift that makes you scratch your head and wonder what on earth you’re going to do with it. And I strongly suspect, you’ll feel like going into the toilet or some other room where you pray no one can find you and quietly scream to yourself and wonder whether anyone will notice if you stay in there for the next 8hrs or however long it is until they all go home (or you can go home to yours).

Whatever Christmas holds for you tomorrow, have a fantastic day, enjoy it and be thankful that it comes but once a year. Merry Christmas folks!

Loving my DSLR!

One of the best things I love about my DSLR is the ability to take shots in JPEG and RAW to edit them once I’ve downloaded them. Because I’m still coming to grips with the higher functions of the 40D, the post production editing software has proved very useful. I love how with the software just by fiddling with different white balance and exposure values, I can make the photo seem more alive by enhancing the red earthy tones in the soil. Much better result don’t you think?

I’m dreaming of a clear, sunny Christmas

Some of you might have read about Leigh’s stance against the promotion of snow related Christmas products in Australia a few weeks ago. Personally, I’m all for getting rid of the notion of a white Christmas in Australia. With the exception of hail storms and freak summer snow falls in the mountain ranges of Victoria and New South Wales, Australia does not have a white Christmas. Do we feel bereft for this? No, we don’t because we don’t know any different.

We don’t dream of chestnuts roasting on an open fire, we dream about prawns sizzling away on the BBQ. We don’t hear silver bells on every street corner, instead we hear neighbours shouting “Merry Christmas mate!” (if they’re on good terms, let’s just forget those on bad terms). Good King Wenceslas wouldn’t have looked out on a white snowy ground, he would have looked out through the hazy heat rising from the bitumen or concrete driveway. Our Santa doesn’t wear a big furry suit, he wears a pair of bathers and snorkelling gear….well that’s when he’s taking time off from taking the Six White Boomers all across Australia.

There are a few Aussie Christmas carols out there and I play them loud and proud on Christmas Day, simply because they mean something to me as an Australian. But the Christmas card selection has always been shamefully northern orientated towards the white snowy Christmas. So I’d like to say a big huge tah and good on ya mate to John Sands who have kindly put out an Australian range of Christmas cards….for those of us who would tell the white Christmas fanatics where they can kindly put it. :lol:

Chocolate fail cookies!

I decided that because I can’t cook cakes or cupcakes and any form of icing turns out to be a sloppy goopy mess resembling dessert sauce, I would try my hand at cookies. I love cookies and I figured that it would probably be cheaper if I made my own when I felt like them.

Well this is why I do not bake…..chocolate cookie fail. :( But then it occurred to me….it need not be all that bad. They still taste good! They just look kind of wrong. So I introduce to you a new form of cooking – fail cooking! Isn’t that great? Now everyone can share their home made cooking because the object is for it to look as bad as possible! I have a feeling I’m going to be very good at this. :lol:

Sing us a song, Piano Man!

Forget Christmas. Last night was what I was looking forward to the most in December. Ironically, I would have missed out on it all if not for my sister’s mistake in booking tickets. I had no idea he was coming, given I live securely under a rock when it comes to that sort of thing. She had booked herself a ticket for the Thursday night performance, only to realise she had tickets also booked for Andre Rieu the same night. I didn’t particularly want to go by myself but I said to her if she could get another ticket in the same row, myself and my partner would both go. She couldn’t and in the end, she rebooked for Saturday night instead so we could all go.

It might have been closer to 11pm on a Saturday by the time he sang it, but Billy Joel did not disappoint. He is the Piano Man and by the volume of people across all ages, singing, dancing and waving to the music, he has still got it some 30 years later. I hope he’s still got it in another decade or so and still touring because I would definitely go back!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

After last year’s success with the big Christmas tree, I decided that I would tempt fate and put it up in the lounge room this year where it is a little more visible. After all, last year both the cats pretty much ignored the big tree and were content with decimating the decorations on the tiny 2ft version I had near the front door. Occasionally I still find stray decorations from it floating around the place. The only thing is, I forgot to bring the 2ft one back out from storage.

Maybe Rosie thought that we had given her an upgrade this year but she started showing a lot of interest in it this time. Initially, she only pulled off part of the tinsel and a few baubles but shortly after I took this photo, I looked back to find her completely up the tree to about the third row of branches. I’ve since put out the 2ft tree and she’s content to knock it over and give it bunny kicks. Let’s just hope it sees the month out….it and our big tree! :lol:

My latest crusade

Occasionally, I get a bit of a bee in my bonnet about something that annoys me and I can’t help myself – I have to try to do something about it. A few months ago, I was on the warpath about people at work not restocking  trays and equipment after they have used them. After trying to correct this annoying behaviour by simple requests, I proceeded to subtle suggestion. When that had no effect, I proceeded to harping on about it to the main offenders I had noticed. Thankfully, people took notice and figured that by doing what they should be doing, they could avoid me reinforcing the issue to them time and time again.

My latest annoyance comes in the form of glitter….particularly the variety that comes online in the form of custom signatures. I’m sure there are plenty of people who think they are really pretty and consequently try to make them as big as they possibly can. But glitter signatures to me are like a red flag to a bull. I don’t know why but they really grate on my nerves. I used plenty of glitter in school on posters and the like and that is where it belongs for me, along with countless mouldy sandwiches and uneaten rotten apples.

So I am declaring my war on glitter signatures to be officially open. I hate them and I wish that they had never been invented. So please if you must use these gawd awful things, can you make them a little smaller so as not to attract my attention? WordArt would be a good alternative….hey I’ll even design you a non-glittery one in minutes if you like. I will keep harping on about it if I have to….I have a track record to maintain. :P

Join the Tang revolution!

I have a confession to make. I have an addiction that I feed almost daily….and it’s all Barbara’s fault! She came to the Pink Ribbon Breakfast a month ago and introduced me to mixing sour cream with Tang and using it as a fruit dip. Like some others I’ve since tried to introduce it to, I was a little dubious. But now I am hooked!

And to make matters worse, there is now a Mango Tang which Leigh was more than happy to supply me with through the post since my supermarket appears to be strangely Mango Tang deficient. I had just a tiny taste of it tonight and I think it could be potentially more addictive than standard Tang. Don’t say I didn’t warn you! :P

Mango Tang

Take one sachet of Tang and mix with two standard tubs of sour cream. Serve with fruit or eat on its own! AWESOME!

The importance of embracing your inner Martha

I’ve started my new job this week and so far, so good! I’m enjoying the regular daylight hours and the return to some kind of routine in my life. One of the benefits of having regular work hours is that I’m now home every single night of the week to have dinner with my other half. This in itself represents a bit of a problem in that previously I could get away with only cooking a few dodgy meals in the course of a week (if any), rather than a full 5-7 days worth. Barnikle would understand where I’m coming from here because we share the same dodgy talents when it comes to anything culinary. We have have both had things set smoke detectors off and while mine caught fully on fire, I’m sure she’s had some close shaves as well. :lol:

I’m pretty sure I can remember a period in my life where I actually could cook more than instant pasta and bottled sauce. But I think those abilities are locked up in a vault that was semi-sealed when I moved to Brisbane around 8 years ago. I visited a good friend who I have known most of my life and she got me all excited about meal planners. OMG, Martha would be so proud! I know how to cook around 5 really good meals (all bottle and packet aided) and I’m pretty sure I could add another 7 half decent ones. That makes 12 days of dinners and I figure the other two we could have “reasonably healthy take out”.

Now permit me to digress because this is an important part of the story. Do you remember the pumpkin? It was absolutely massive and came from my sister’s garden after she chucked the seeds in the back corner in a heap of mulch. I had absolutely no idea what to do with it at the time but impressed by its size, I put it in my pantry and promptly forgot all about it.

Coming back from Tassie, I found my pantry overflowing with stuff my mum had bought while house-sitting and I was hard pressed to find any room to put the goodies we had brought back home with us. While trying to clear out some space, I found the jolly pumpkin and my other half suggested it would be a great time to try cooking a pumpkin pie or two. After all, my sister can cook them and brought the recipe back from the US so how hard could it be?

Let’s just say we had this brainwave at 6pm or so and it is now a bit past 10pm and I am yet to have my first forkful of pumpkin pie. I am at this point, a little dubious about whether or not it has been a success. Only time and taste test will tell. :P

Two weeks on the Devil’s Island

It’s amazing how quickly two weeks can pass – especially when you’re having fun! The year has passed pretty quickly for me and has brought along with it a whole heap of changes for me and for the people I choose to spend my life around. But for at least six months, I have been counting down to one thing only – our trip to Tasmania! This was my third time back to Tasmania and I was not disappointed. It was funny to see that although some 15 odd years has passed since my first visit to Tassie, some things had not changed one little bit. I think that’s what I like most about Tassie….it’s almost timeless in nature and you know that some things are just never going to change which is reassuring to person like me who is a creature of habit. :lol:

I had planned to have a bit more of a laid back visit to Tassie this time and just take things as they came but still we covered almost 4000kms travelling around one small island. Even so, there are some things which we had to leave for next time. We have family there now, so it gives us an excuse to go back again – hopefully it’s not another ten years before we go again this time.

There’s possibly only one thing I don’t love about Tasmania – the lack of reliable high speed broadband! Consequently I am doing a fortnight’s blog entry at once whereas I had planned to update it along the way. It is a small price to pay for the many wonderful things the island has to offer.

Two weeks means two photos….so I had to choose two out of the many in my Tasmania set on Flickr. It’s the Devil’s island, so I had to have one of the iconic Tassie Devil. The other I chose for one of the things I loved best about Tassie – bright sunshine and a clear blue sky and still able to enjoy the day out and about without sweating buckets!
